When should existing ISO 9001:2000 certified companies upgrade to 2008 edition?
ISO published the new version of ISO 9001 on 15-Nov-2008. The new version will be recognised as ISO 9001:2008.
Note: The ISO 9001:2008 is available from ISO site from 13-Nov-2008 onwards but official date of publication is 15-Nov-2008.
The transition to new edition will be governed by ISO and IAF agreement. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and the IAF (International Accreditation Forum) have agreed an implementation plan to ensure a smooth migration of accredited certification to ISO 9001:2008, after consultation with international groupings representing quality system or auditor certification bodies, and industry users of ISO 9001 certification services.
The agreed implementation plan in relation to accredited certification is therefore the following:Accredited certification to the ISO 9001:2008 shall not be granted until the publication of ISO 9001:2008 as an International Standard. Certification of conformity to ISO 9001:2008 and/or national equivalents shall only be issued after official publication of ISO 9001:2008 and after a routine surveillance or re-certification audit against ISO 9001:2008. Validity of certifications to ISO 9001:2000 One year after publication of ISO 9001:2008 all accredited certifications issued (new certifications or re-certifications) shall be to ISO 9001:2008.Twenty four months after publication by ISO of ISO 9001:2008, any existing certification issued to ISO 9001:2000 shall not be valid.
This translates in to following dates:
-
Existing ISO 9001:2000 certified companies can continue ISO 9001:2000 based surveillance audit until 14-Nov-2009 (12 months from date of publication of ISO 9001:2008).
-
Certification bodies will issue new certificate of ISO 9001:2000 till 14-Nov-2009 which will be valid till 14-Nov-2010 and not three years.
-
If your existing certificate is valid beyond 14-Nov-2010, than it will be considered as valid till 14-Nov-2010.
-
From 14-Nov-2009, all audits, New Certifications or surveillance will be based on ISO 9001:2008 only.
-
Existing ISO 9001:2008 certified companies should upgrade during regular sureillance audits depending upon their date of issue of original certificate some companies may have to wait for upgrade till start of 2010.

Upgradation
The information shared is quite good as of March 26th, 2009 and especially for the Quality/ HR Incharges , since dealings with the accreditation bodies have become very smooth and clarity established will certainly have assertive transition.
Best wishes.
