Chinese Dragon : Killing India

Cheap Chinese products or imitations are widely sold in India. You can find them in your nearest “China Bazaar” shops or even on footpaths near every railway station or bus stop.

These products are cheap for three reasons, first they are inferior in quality, second they are imitations of the branded products of similar design and third they are brought in India by under-declaring its value and there by paying less tax.

Chinese Toys market in India is estimated at about INR 2500 crore. By under-declaring value to toys, importer are paying less duty. The estimated loss to Indian exchequer is about 1000 crore.

Recently India banned toys import from china on medical and health grounds but clarified that certified toys can be imported without any restrictions. Toys should be certified as safe by a laboratory accredited to International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).

Toys are not the only item imported in India from china, there are mobile phones, dairy products, fake drugs etc. Indian government on Wednesday, 17 jun 2009, put quality restrictions on mobile phone, dairy products and toys. The aim is to curb the menace.

The Directorate-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said mobile handsets without the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identification) number, which helps authorities to track the sale and use of phone can not be imported from now on.

At present 30 million such phones are in use in India. Security agencies have raised concern over use of such phone as these are used by terrorists and underworld kingpins making it difficult (or should I say near impossible) to track sale and usage.

The dairy products imported from china are found to contain Melamine, used to make plastic and fertilizer. This dangerous chemical can cause kidney stones or  even kidney failure.
